As a former reading teacher, I’m a HUGE fan of books. I truly love them and believe reading is one of the best things to do for self-improvement. And reading as a business owner? That’s a definite must. Whether you’re just starting out and dreaming about the day you finally leave your 9-5, or you’re a more experienced entrepreneur, these must-read books will only benefit you and your future success by continuing to expand your knowledge and grow your skills.

Now it’s time for some homework.

(I guess I’m still a teacher at heart—what can I say?)

Add these 7 titles to your reading list, and trust me, every one of these business books is worth your time. Don’t forget to report back! (Just kidding 🙃).

For Taking Your Side Hustle Full-Time

Two Weeks Notice by Amy Porterfield

Amy Porterfield’s instant bestseller, Two Weeks Notice, launched in 2023 and earned its place at the top of the charts with real-life advice for aspiring entrepreneurs ready to take the next step. Amy chronicles her own life-changing decision to leave her corporate job, and provides valuable insights along the way. It’s truly an, “Okay, I can do this” kind of moment, and who doesn’t need a little pep talk when they’re about to make a big change? I know I did.

And even better? Amy also includes actionable tips along with the *exact* steps to take when you’re launching yourself into full-time entrepreneur status. Seriously, it’s one of my top must-read books. Buy it (or borrow it from the library!) now.

For Creating An Irresistible Brand

Building A StoryBrand by Donald Miller

When I started taking my business seriously, Building a Storybrand was the first book that I picked up. I knew that I had to think long and hard about how I wanted to position my brand, and how I was going to do it in a way that was both impactful and genuine.

It’s just one of those must-read books that’s foundational—every single person who’s interested in building a business should read it. It gives clarity around both you and your customers, and will guide you in creating a brand that resonates with your ideal clients. If I had to choose one book to read from this entire list, Building A Storybrand would be it.

Obsessed: Building A Brand People Love From Day One by Emily Heyward

There’s nothing not to like about Obsessed—it’s an insightful and no-nonsense look at the old rules of branding your business and why they’re no longer the gold standard. Rather, there’s a new set of best-practices in town, and if you want your brand to be one of the lucky ones who develop a cult following, then you need to get on board.

Backed by her years of experience as the founder of Red Antler, a brand and marketing agency thriving in Brooklyn, NY, Emily Heyward walks you through the new principles of building and marketing a brand—and she uses some of today’s favorites to show you how it’s done. It’s an incredibly interesting read, and one you don’t want to miss.

For Making Money Moves

Profit First by Mike Michalowicz

As someone who was truly mystified by managing business finances in the beginning, Profit First actually saved my booty. Like, I honestly can’t believe I went so long without having this system in place because it’s magical.

Mike Michalowicz created the Profit First Method after realizing that his own 7-figure businesses never made a profit, and realized that managing money doesn’t have to be so freakin’ complicated. His non-traditional method of accounting is a complete lifesaver for myself and many other businesses, and if you want to get off on the right foot (or revamp your accounting!), I HIGHLY encourage you to pick it up ASAP. My list of must-read books wouldn’t be complete without this one.

For Keeping Yourself Grounded

Why Simple Wins by Lisa Bodell

The assertion in this must-read book, Why Simple Wins, is just that—simple. It dives into the idea that business is getting overcomplicated, and therefore, work is becoming more “busy” and less productive. And when businesses create a ton of their own hoops to jump through? It leads to time wasted that could’ve been spent driving the business forward or serving clients efficiently.

Here’s the solve—Scale back on the systems that create sneaky time sucks, and focus on implementing streamlined operations that give you time back in your schedule. I love Lisa’s message. The beauty behind it is that when your business becomes simplified, you have more energy to become creative, innovative, and empowered.

Tough Titties: On Living Your Best Life When You’re The F-ing Worst by Laura Belgray

I don’t know about you, but the title of Laura Belgray’s new book, Tough Titties, was enough to make me click “add to cart.” Yes, it does make me giggle. But the content of the book is so much more than just a silly (albeit, brilliant) title.

It’s a hilarious, relatable, and somewhat cringey coming-of-age story that reminds you to follow your own path. No matter what you’re supposed to do. Described as “one big permission slip to be 100% yourself,” this book dishes out an important lesson for us entrepreneurs. Do what’s right for YOU. And don’t feel pressured to make your brand just like everyone elses, because well, the magic lies in what sets you apart. Do yourself a favor and spend the weekend laughing out loud with this must-read book.

Okay, so you read the books. Now what?

Well, now that you’ve got a clearer picture of the brand you’re building, it’s time to put it out in the world. To make the biggest positive impact you can, it’s crucial to create messaging that matches your mission and communicates your brand’s unique value.
